Nascar Xfinity: big crash at Watkins Glen

Nascar Xfinity: big crash at Watkins Glen

Austin Hill triggered a late-race pileup, bringing out a red flag during the Mission 200 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The race was immediately interrupted to allow for emergency response and barrier repairs.

The dynamics

The incident that occurred yesterday during the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen International was one of the most dramatic of the season, with multiple cars involved in a massive chain-reaction crash.

🚨 Huge Crash on Lap 73

With fewer than ten laps remaining in the Mission 200, Austin Hill and Michael McDowell were locked in a tight battle for second place. During the duel, Hill made contact with the left rear of McDowell’s car, sending him hard into the outside wall. The impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving at least 11 cars, including those of William Sawalich, Taylor Gray, Ryan Ellis, and Josh Bilicki. The race was brought to a halt under a red flag for about 45 minutes to allow debris removal and track cleanup.

Fortunately, all drivers involved were evaluated at the infield care center and released without serious injuries.

🏁 After the restart, the win went to 19-year-old Connor Zilisch. Starting from pole and leading 60 of the 82 laps, he dominated the race and secured his sixth victory of the season.

Broken collarbone for Zilisch

However, an unexpected incident occurred during the post-race celebrations involving the newly crowned race winner: Zilisch slipped while climbing out of his car in the pit lane, falling and suffering a broken collarbone. He was immediately assisted and transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Subsequent tests ruled out any head trauma, but the injury will force him to miss today’s scheduled Cup Series race.
