SC63 Lamborghini: stop for the LMDH program in 2026

It was born to compete on the world stage in endurance racing — the Lamborghini SC63. Initially launched with a strong focus overseas, it spent two seasons in IMSA under the LMDh program. Today, in an official statement, the SC63 has been retired, marking the end of Lamborghini’s Hypercar project.
After halting its involvement in the WEC — which only lasted one season — the brand has now also pulled the plug on its American campaign for 2026. In the announcement, the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based manufacturer emphasized how the original conditions of the program have changed significantly. As the project progressed, the demands in terms of both budget and technical complexity went far beyond the original expectations.
Lamborghini Temerario GT3, it’s up on it
The Temerario GT3 project was officially unveiled in July 2025 during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and it is currently in an advanced development phase, undergoing a series of tests on various European circuits. Its official race debut is scheduled for the 2026 12 Hours of Sebring, part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The goal of the project is to surpass both the sporting and commercial success of the Huracán GT3, which has so far collected 96 titles and 192 race wins worldwide.
The Temerario Super Trofeo, on the other hand, will be revealed by the end of the year.
Another ongoing project from Lamborghini is the continuation of its Super Trofeo one-make series, currently featuring the Huracán models. This championship gathers a large number of race cars derived from the GT3 platform. The World Finals of the series will take place at Misano Circuit on November 8–9, with over 120 drivers battling across different classes. Lamborghini SC63 technical features
Let’s take a look at the technical features of the Lamborghini SC63, the flagship prototype that represented the Italian brand in both WEC and IMSA—unfortunately, with underwhelming results.
The SC63 was Lamborghini’s first step into the Hypercar (LMDh) category, developed in collaboration with Ligier Automotive, featuring:
- Carbon-fiber monocoque chassis
- Twin-turbo V8 engine (3.8L) developed in-house
- Standardized hybrid system (as per LMDh regulations)
- Rear-wheel drive with a combined power output close to 680 hp
- Xtrac gearbox and Williams Advanced Engineering battery
The car was designed to compete on a global scale, but persistent reliability issues and a highly competitive field made consistent success elusive.
In contrast, Ferrari’s 499P—a direct rival—proved to be an engineering masterpiece. Since its debut, it has won three consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans, establishing itself as the benchmark in Hypercar racing. The 499P’s success highlighted Ferrari’s superior race strategy, development efficiency, and adaptability to changing conditions—areas where Lamborghini still has room to grow.
