Mercedes: Russell renews, but Wolff still dreams of another top
While the 2026 Formula 1 grid is slowly taking shape, the driver market continues to deliver surprises. At Mercedes, the official confirmation has arrived from Toto Wolff: George Russell will stay with the team for another season. But all eyes remain on one name in particular — Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
Antonelli for 2026 confirmed Kimi Antonelli confirmed in F1 for 2026
For a long time, Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal and shareholder, has never hidden his admiration for the Dutchman. The goal is ambitious: bring the four-time world champion to Brackley in 2027.
A move that seems far from simple, since the only realistic scenario would come to life if Kimi Andrea Antonelli were to join another team. This would leave a vacant seat alongside Russell.
F1 Mercedes Multi millionair/year deal for George
And speaking of Russell, after weeks of intense negotiations, an agreement was finally reached. The new deal, a multi-year contract worth around €30 million per season, meets the English driver’s main demands. including his wish to reduce off-track commitments to no more than 60 days a year for sponsor and marketing events.
It’s unclear whether Wolff agreed to that clause, but one thing’s for sure: Mercedes’ second place in the Constructors’ Championship owes a lot to him.
In recent days, Toto Wolff praised both of his drivers, highlighting how Russell is often underestimated because of his introverted personality. A trait that keeps him away from the media spotlight, but not from delivering results.
The same goes for Antonelli. Th rookie driverin his first Formula 1 season has already impressed with a Sprint pole position in Miami and a third place at the Canadian Grand Prix. All while handling immense pressure from both media and fans. A young talent who can only improve in 2026.

Verstappen Option for 2027
However, the Max question still hangs over 2027. Despite Wolff’s past attempts to lure him away, Verstappen remains deeply tied to Red Bull. A team that pampers him and gives him full freedom in his off-track choices.
His passion for GT racing has already seen him compete in two events this year, and rumors suggest a possible entry in the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours, an activity that Red Bull has already approved.
Only new challenges and motivations could convince him to switch colors. For now, though, Verstappen is fully focused on one mission: defending his title and battling the two McLarens.
A nearly impossible feat — but if there’s one driver who never gives up, it’s Max Verstappen.
