Charles Leclerc Evaluates His Future: Between Ferrari and New Opportunities

It has been reported in the past few days that Charles Leclerc is exploring his options with his manager Nicolas Todt regarding his future in Formula 1. The Monegasque driver seems to have lost hope regarding his situation at Ferrari. Despite this, he maintains a positive and confident approach at every Grand Prix. But even for him, however, patience has its limits.

Leclerc joined Ferrari in 2019, achieving a lifelong dream. Since then, his career has been marked more by flashes of brilliance than consistent results. With the Prancing Horse, he has secured 8 wins, 27 pole positions, and 48 podiums, impressive numbers, but they highlight Ferrari’s longstanding struggle to perform in races compared to qualifying. An issue that has plagued the team for several years.

Before arriving at Ferrari, Leclerc had already shown his talent: he won the GP3 in 2016 and the Formula 2 championship in 2017. In 2018, during his first full season in Formula 1 with Sauber, he finished thirteenth in the World Drivers’ Championship with 39 points. Earning three consecutive seventh-place finishes in Mexico, Brazil, and Abu Dhabi, compared to his teammate Marcus Ericsson’s nine points.

In 2024, Leclerc fought until the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi with McLaren for the Constructors’ Championship, ultimately losing by just a handful of points, once again demonstrating his talent and determination.

Rumors suggest that after six years together, seven if we include 2026, when Charles will still be in red,the Monegasque might have to set aside sentiment and look at new horizons. This could mean exploring opportunities with another team for 2027. According to reports, Mercedes and especially McLaren are interested in the 1997-born driver, potentially proposing a swap with Australian Oscar Piastri.

McLaren swap with Oscar Piastri?

However, it is not certain that Piastri would want to move, as everything will depend on how this year unfolds. He is currently in contention for the Drivers’ Championship, in direct competition with his teammate and rival Lando Norris. With the Constructors’ title already secured mathematically by McLaren in Singapore, Piastri will surely want to assert himself further, as he did in the most recent race.

Another option for Leclerc is Mercedes, where negotiations for George Russell’s renewal for 2026 are still ongoing. The British driver has yet to accept the three-pointed star’s offer, disagreeing with the commercial commitments required by the team and seeking a contract longer than the single year proposed by Mercedes.

We will have to wait and see how the market evolves in the coming month. Leclerc, despite his Ferrari heart, has to make decisions for his own best interest, in order to finally compete for a career-long Drivers’ Championship.
