Has Ferrari already set its sights on Hamilton’s replacement?
Ferrari Piastri? Rumors suggest he could replace Lewis Hamilton in 2027 .Here’s what we know about the potential move and why it won’t be easy.
In Formula 1, like in all top-tier sports, news travels at lightning speed. When a team-pilot relationship doesn’t immediately click, rumors about potential replacements begin to circulate. And according to the latest reports, Ferrari may already be planning for life after Lewis Hamilton, possibly as early as next year or the one after.
Hamilton joined Ferrari for the 2025 season and has so far only managed to win one Sprint race — in China. The SF25 hasn’t proven competitive enough, and despite his efforts, he hasn’t been able to make a big impact. Currently, he sits 6th in the Drivers’ Championship with 117 points, right behind teammate Charles Leclerc, 5th with 163 points.

Together, they’ve brought Ferrari to 2nd in the Constructors’ standings with 280 points. Far behind the dominant McLaren duo of Norris and Piastri, who sit at a combined 617. Still, considering that Red Bull and Mercedes are also struggling this year, finishing P2 would be a respectable, if not satisfying, result for the Scuderia.

Ferrari Piastri: the 2027 option?
Let’s consider that Hamilton has just arrived and stepped into a car completely different from the Mercedes he was used to. Countless small changes and adjustments were needed after leaving the Stuttgart-based team with which he won six F1 world titles. His current deal includes one guaranteed year with an option to renew for a second — with Lewis that will surely want to give it another shot.
However, in Maranello, eyes are already turning toward McLaren’s young sensation, Oscar Piastri. The Australian driver is a real title contender in 2025 and could even clinch both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships with McLaren. And even if he doesn’t seal the title this year, he’ll have another shot in 2026 — a year when Hamilton is 90% likely to still be racing in red. Then, in 2027, the big move to Ferrari could happen.
McLaren contract beyond 2026
But McLaren might be reluctant to let their rising star go. Epecially after securing him with a contract extension earlier this year, ahead of the season opener in Australia. Piastri himself expressed pride and joy in continuing his F1 journey with such a legendary team. And while Ferrari is no less iconic, there’s an old saying that might apply: “Don’t change a winning team.”
We’ll see what happens, but in our opinion, a Ferrari Piastri duo in 2027 seems quite unlikely.
