Mercedes AMG GT2 Edition W16: The Ultimate Track-Only star

They somehow managed to squeeze 818 horsepower out of a 4.0 V8. If there’s any wizard who knows how, call us

We believe the unveiling of the new Mercedes AMG GT2 Edition W16 will truly surprise you… Especially knowing that Kimi Antonelli is also behind this spectacular project.

When you think of Mercedes, luxurious and elegant cars come to mind—vehicles built for long journeys, as if you were sitting in a living room on wheels. And indeed, that’s what the Stuttgart-based brand did best up until about 15 years ago. Then, in 2010, Mercedes returned to Formula 1, and over the following 15 years, it built the most dominant winning streak in history with Hamilton (https://sportchaos.live/hamilton-thats-a-bad-new-penalty-for-monza/) and Bottas.

Today, they know exactly how to channel that experience into creating high-performance models that push the limits of what’s humanly possible. For the reveal of their new GT2 car, Mercedes chose the Monza Grand Prix weekend—and fittingly, they’ve named it after their 2025 F1 car: the W16. Let us introduce it…

It will be produced in just 30 units for an equally limited number of lucky owners, who will be able to unleash it on tracks around the world. Designed strictly for track use, it was unveiled with a special video shot at the iconic Monza circuit. This new version of the GT2 represents a significant step forward compared to the one introduced in 2022. Since it doesn’t need to comply with road homologation rules, the engineers at Affalterbach were free to unleash their most ambitious ideas.

Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 Specs

Starting with the engine, a meticulously crafted V8 that bears the signature of the engineer responsible for its assembly on the top cover. The familiar 4.0-liter biturbo has been supercharged with newly developed, purpose-built turbochargers and an upgraded electronic control system. Standard power output? 720 horsepower—rising to 818 hp with the Push2Pass function, activated via a button on the racing steering wheel. This system signals the ECU to temporarily boost power, giving the car an extra burst when needed. Torque is also increased by 200 Nm, reaching a total of 1,000 Nm.

The racing transmission of this Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 is a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox mounted at the rear and connected to the engine via a carbon fiber driveshaft. Numerous aerodynamic upgrades have also been introduced: new adjustable winglets on the front wheel arches, small fins on the outer edges of the fenders to generate more downforce and directional stability.

The car also features a DRS system, similar to the one used in Formula 1. With the press of a button on the steering wheel, the front wheel arch flaps close and the rear wing shifts to a horizontal position, allowing the car to reach a top speed of 320 km/h. The best part? You can activate the Push2Pass button at the same time—unleashing ultimate speed in all its glory.

In terms of power-to-weight ratio, the special edition model boasts an impressive figure of around 1.7 kg/hp. Thanks to its consistent lightweight construction, the GT2 Edition W16 has a weight of just 1,430 kilograms. The newly designed magnesium rims, which feature colour accents that create a visual link to the Formula 1® car, also contribute to the weight optimisation.

Antonelli is somewhat the patron of this special edition, as the interior has been redesigned and enriched with details paying tribute to the young Mercedes driver. Kimi Antonelli’s name is featured on the car’s door sills, and the center console is, of course, finished in Petronas Motorsport colors. The steering wheel, dubbed Cube Controls, has been reshaped for better ergonomics, and each dashboard features a badge reading “1 of 30.”

The handover ceremony of the Mercedes AMG GT2 Edition W16 is scheduled as part of an exclusive event at a European racetrack. In addition to an in-depth briefing on the car and a track session, the program also includes a meet-and-greet with drivers and senior members of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. Each of the strictly limited 30 units of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 comes with a custom edition-specific car cover and racing gear from OMP and BELL Helmets, the official suppliers of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. The racing suit and helmet are both styled after the official F1 team’s design.

“I had the opportunity to drive the Mercedes AMG GT2 Edition W16 and had so much fun that I wished I could’ve spent more time on track. The Push2Pass function is truly an incredible feature. The Edition model isn’t just fast, it’s also safe — and that immediately gives you confidence. I’m very proud to be part of this project and to see my signature featured on every single Mercedes AMG GT2 Edition W16.”
